Turkey

I love Turkey! It is quite beautiful. From Istanbul to Cappadocia. I will go back! I found the people charming and when you are in Cappadocia you can stay in your choice of cave hotels. It is such a unique place. The pottery and rug making is quite interesting to watch. Goreme Open Air Museum is a must.

Terrace Houses 1

An entrance to a terrace home. Quite possibly a courtyard. 2013

Terraced Houses, Ephesus

The terraced houses were considered luxurious like condominiums. You can tell from the ornate floor and some wall paintings. Archeologists are uncovering more and more ruins here. Each time there is more to see. 2013

Terraced Houses 3

You can see this was a grand room with paintings that look like wallpaper and a beautiful mosaic floor. 2013

Gulet Boats

Traditional two masted Turkish boats for rent in the busy summertime. Bodrum is popular for Turkish citizens to vacation. 2013

Button Shop

There are many button shops in Istanbul. 2013

Textile Shop

The shops in the Grand Bazaar are a lot of fun. I did not want to get cheated so I hired a local guide to take me through the Bazaar. Smartest thing I ever did.

Lamp Shop

The lamp shops are amazing. So many to choose from. However, they are not always up to US electrical standards. It's best to have them rewired when you get home. 2013

Ablution Fountain

The Hagia Sofia was under construction when I was there but the fountain was beautiful at dusk. 2013

The Blue Mosque

I actually wept it was so beautiful inside. 2013

Fairy Chimney's Cappadocia, Turkey

This is such a unique place. I want to go back when it's sunny! I missed the balloon ride due to the weather. 2013

Many of these were dwellings. Each family had their own chapel to pray in. 2013

Pigeon Valley, Cappadocia

A beautiful spot in Turkey. 2013

Pigeon Valley 2

You can see the old dwellings. Some of the hotels have caves you can stay in. The old dwellings are no longer deemed safe, however. 2013

Pigeon Valley 2

There are many homing pigeons kept here. You can see one flying in the upper left corner. 2013

Museum Hotel Garden

Beautiful Hotel with cave suites. The whole region is full of hotels like this. I highly recommend. 2013

Goreme OpenAir Museum

Fascinating place. There are frescos from the 10th-12th centuries inside the cave dwellings. It is said persecuted Christians hid here and then Byzantine Monks decorated the churches. 2013

Rug Fiber

You could watch weavers in this shop but outside wool is dyed in these kettles from naturally occurring plants. Cappadocia, Turkey. 2013
